On Saturday night, we played Riordan of San Francisco, and they owned us in every aspect of the basketball game. I'd like to give credit to the Riordan team because they worked harder than us, blocked out every possession, played better defense, and executed better on offense.
However, all of that was because of our lack of respect for an opponent. We have beat Riordan every time for the past few years and we, especially myself, felt like we could show up and win. We came out flat, played with no energy, and just didn't play with the standard of excellence that we have at Bellarmine. It was a disappointing night. In addition to that, when coach asked us what we needed to do most on offense, which was in bold and at the top of the scouting report, not a single person knew the answer. And that pretty much represented how the night went, not knowing what we were supposed to do and having a lack of respect. Our coaches spend multiple hours watching film, breaking down player tendencies, and drawing up our opponent's plays. It made me feel really bad that I wasted the coaches time and effort and didn't give Riordan the respect they deserve.
I wrote earlier, about how my coach asked if I have ever played a worse game after the Valley Christian game...and I think I just played an even worse one on Saturday night. However, Danny Schatzman played an amazing game, really representing how Bellarmine basketball is played. All of the players need to adopt Danny's constant intensity.
In general there were some good and some bad as a result from the game. The good: We learned our lesson and are ready to play intense, great basketball the remainder of the season, never taking a game off. The bad: All the running it took to have us learn that lesson!!
Although this was a dull moment in our season, I am extremely excited to go into the Lancer gym and take care of business against our rival, Saint Francis!
(I know this is football, but the basketball game will be just like it... matching up with each other playing smash mouth basketball)
It will be tough to stop the guys on Saint Francis, they have an amazing point guard in Khalid Johnson, a solid post guy in Drew Dickey, and some quality wing players in players like Jimmy Frazier, one of my best friends from elementary school.
For the Bells, it'll be nice to have Griffin Goudreau back in the lineup. He is an amazing player who has missed our last two games and our offense has been lacking because of it. Having him back will be awesome. I can't wait to go into Mountain View and take on the Lancers!
